我們的主語(Subject)是一位事業有成的「霸道總裁」。他是眾神的首領，他的得力助手名叫主語補語 (Subject complement) 。他是聰明勤奮的年輕人，職責只有一個，補足他老闆主語(Subject)的意義和表明他的特徵的。
這年輕人喜歡奉承他的老闆，我們可以從他「拍馬屁」中深入理解他的作用。
例1: My boss is the leader.
主語是 “My boss”， 主語補語是 “the leader”。
例2:My boss is the most handsome leader.
這裡的主語補語是名詞片語 (noun phrase) * “the most handsome leader”。
例3: He is handsome, wealthy and powerful.
這裡的主語補語是形容詞 (adjective) “handsome, wealthy and powerful ”。
其實， 這位馬屁精的法力高強，它既可以是名詞，也可以是形容詞，更擁有多重身分，例如副詞、現在分詞、介詞短語等。我們再看下去吧。
例4: My boss is going to control the world.
這裡的主語補語是現在分詞 (present participle)* “going to control the world”.
例5: My boss’s influence is everywhere.
主語是 “My boss’s influence”， 主語補語是副詞 “everywhere”。
現在，我們運用「逆向思維」想一想：既然主語補語(Subject complement)已經這樣強大了，主語(Subject)豈不是威力無窮？對啊！主語也擁有多重身分，這裡沒有空間一一講述，最簡單的，主語是代名詞(pronoun)，我們一定會讀過I am a boy. I am girl. 這些句子，代名詞I 就是了subject了 。主語也可以是名詞，例如剛才那句 “My boss is the leader.”， 名詞Boss也就是主語了。
其實，主語 (Subject) 知道他的助手太口甜舌滑，不敢完全相信他。所以，主語 (Subject) 找了一位美女和主語補語(Subject complement)做拍檔，美其名是分擔工作，實情就是監視主語補語 (Subject complement)。因為深知主語補語(Subject complement) 喜歡個性活潑和身材豐滿的女生，所以他找來的美女就比較特別。她就是連繫動詞 (Linking verb) 。她有別於Transitive verb 和Intransitive verb，只是連繫Subject 和Subject complement，沒有別的工作啦 。(因為她需要多點時間跳Flamingo~)連繫動詞的例子有am, is, become, feel, smell等。
例1: The girl appears outgoing and sexy.
主語是 “The girl”， 連繫動詞是“appears” ，主語補語是 “outgoing and sexy”。
另一方面，主語(Subject)是一位好爸爸，十分疼愛他的大兒子直接賓語 (direct object)，特別安排了一位神秘保鑣照顧大兒子的日常起居生活，這位保鑣名字叫賓語補語 (object complement)，他身分神秘，除了他的主人和少主人外，其實很少人知道他的樣子。他對少主人忠心耿耿，以下可能是他的內心獨白：
例1: The smart kid makes me happy.
主語 (subject) 是 “The smart kid”，動詞 (verb)是”makes”，直接賓語 (direct object) 是 ”me”， 賓語補語 (object complement) 是“happy ”。
例2: I found the kid obedient and diligent.
主語(subject complement) 是 “I”，動詞(verb) 是 “found”，直接賓語 (direct object) 是 “the kid”， 賓語補語 (object complement) 是“obedient and diligent ”。
