Day 9: Advantages & disadvantages questions – IELTS Academic Writing Task 2 10-Day Planner

Nowadays online education has become popular as more institutes and companies are offering courses online. However, many people prefer the traditional, classroom training or study. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of both methods.

Sample Essay

[1] In recent years, online learning has become increasingly popular; nevertheless, traditional way of learning still has its supporters. It is believed there are merits and demerits of both learning methods.

[2] In terms of facilitating learning, online learning caters to different types of individuals, as it offers a valuable option for people with special needs, such as the disabled, full time workers or those who have to take care of family members. Moreover, lectures can be recorded and made into video programs, so students can listen to the lectures repeatedly until they understand them. Also, teachers do not have to repeat the same materials in different classes, which saves them a lot of time and energy. In contrast, traditional learning requires students to attend classes in person, which can be time-consuming for some people. Worse still, students who have difficulty in learning may feel frustrated when they cannot follow the lecture, not to mention the extra time and effort teachers need to spend in explaining to these students.

[3] However, the downsides of online learning are also obvious. Some students who lack self-discipline can be easily distracted. Without teachers’ supervision, they are likely to lose motivation to study. In addition, students will hardly have opportunities to communicate and interact with their peers and teachers face to face, which is not beneficial to their social skills and team spirit. In contrast, students will be able to learn more effectively in the presence of teachers, who can provide students with guidance and support.

[4] In conclusion, distance learning makes education more flexible and efficient, but it cannot replace learning with teachers in traditional classroom settings. After all, the role of education is facilitating the whole-person development of individuals rather than granting qualifications.

就像文中的‘It is believed there are merits and demerits of both learning methods.’。

第二段,範文闡述了方法A的優點,如網上學習迎合了不同類型的個人(online learning caters to different types of individuals);講座可以錄製成視頻節目,學生可以反復聽講座,直到他們理解(lectures can be recorded and made into video programs, so students can listen to the lectures repeatedly until they understand them)。然後闡述了方法B的缺點,如傳統的學習要求學生親自去教室上課(traditional learning requires students to attend classes in person);那些在學習上有困難的學生可能會因為聽不懂講座而感到沮喪,更不用說老師還要花額外的時間和精力向這些學生解釋(students who have difficulty in learning may feel frustrated when they cannot follow the lecture, not to mention the extra time and effort teachers need to spend in explaining to these students)。

(Some students who lack self-discipline can be easily distracted);學生將很難有機會與他們的同齡人和老師面對面的交流和互動(students will hardly have opportunities to communicate and interact with their peers and teachers face to face)。 因為對於方法B,有老師在場的時候,學生能更有效地學習,老師能給學生提供指導和支持(students will be able to learn more effectively in the presence of teachers, who can provide students with guidance and support)。

第四段,最後,範文對方法A和方法B做了一個總結,得出自己的結論,那就是誰也不可能取代誰(distance learning makes education more flexible and efficient, but it cannot replace learning with teachers in traditional classroom settings)。
