Day 1: Letters to Managers – IELTS General Writing Task 1 10-Day Planner

You are working for a company. You need to take some time off work and want to ask your manager about this.

Write a letter to your manager. In your letter

explain why you want to take time of work

give details of the amount of time you need

suggest how your work could be covered while you are away.

首先,直接提出你的要求比如,都是提出“我想要請假”,“I want to take time off work”給人感覺比較霸道強勢,而“I would like to take time off work”則比較委婉含蓄。

第一段:引言-表達你寫這封信的目的 e.g. I am writing to….

段:解釋當你不在的時候,如何將你的工作分配給其他人。提前向你的同事道歉;

Dear Sir,

I am writing to ask for a leave from work due to an accident that happened to my parents.

An accident happened to my parents three days ago. My parents were hit by a vehicle. They have been in a critical condition.

Owing to my parents’ serious condition, I would like to ask for a two-week leave from work. I plan to make use of this period of time to take care of my parents. Besides, I am going to seek renowned medical professors to discuss the situation. Moreover, I need to accompany them for physiotherapy treatment at the hospital.

Lastly, I would like to suggest how my work could be covered while I am away. If you allow my leave, I will hand over my remaining tasks to my colleagues/ John, my trusted co-worker. I am really/ truly sorry that I cannot help you with the project, but I will do my utmost / try my best to find the most qualified people to replace me. I hope you will be satisfied with my proposed arrangement.

It is my sincere hope that / I sincerely hope that I can be given two weeks to take care of my parents, as they need my support urgently. I would be much grateful if you can give me your permission.

Yours sincerely,

Chris Wong
