Introduction to Question Types in Duolingo English Test

1.Select the real English words in this list

This question type tests your English vocabulary listening and analysis ability.

Each question has 9 word recordings , and each exam has 5-7 groups of this type of question. The answering time is 1 minute and 30 seconds.

There is no limit to the number of times you can listen to the word recordings during the answering time.

2. Select the real English words in this list

This question type tests your ability to identify English vocabulary.

Each question has around 15 words, and each exam has 5-7 groups of this type of question. The answering time for each group of question is 1 minute and 30 seconds.

3. Type the statement that you hear

This question type tests whether students can understand and write down the sentences they hear, and write the sentences accurately. This question type has 4-7 items in the exam. Each question will be repeated three times, and candidates have 60 seconds to answer.

4. Type the missing letters to complete the text below

This question type tests whether you can understand the logic of the article. It also assesses your grammar knowledge and word spelling ability. There are about 6 questions in the exam, and you have 3 minutes to answer.

5. Write one or more sentences that describe the image

This question type tests your ability to read pictures and write. There are about 1-3 of this question type in the exam, and you have 1 minute to answer. Could you describe the image below?

6. Respond to the question in at least 50 words

This question type is quite demanding, and it will assess whether you can write 50 words in 5 minutes. Don’t confuse this question part with another writing question type, which is for interview purpose and will not be assessed.

7. Speak the English words for each image

You  have 15 seconds to read the introduction. After each question appears, you will have 3 seconds to speak the answer. There are 12 questions, which appear twice, each with 6 pictures. Could you name the images below?

8. Record yourself saying the statement below

This question type assesses your oral ability. This question type has about 4-6 items in the exam, and you have 20 seconds to answer.

9. Describe Image

The requirements for this question type are relatively high, because the types of pictures are diversified. There are about 1-3 items for this question type in the exam. You need to use at least 30 seconds to describe a picture. The speech time cannot exceed 1 minute and 30 seconds. Could you describe the image below?

10. Read the question and speak at least 30 seconds

This question type is similar to IELTS Speaking Part 2. There will be a topic and three sub-questions. This question type appears once in the exam. Candidates need to speak at least 30 seconds, but not more than 1 minute and 30 seconds. You can see an example of the question below. 

11. Listen to the question and give at least a 30-second response.

There will be 1-2 questions for you to answer in the recording.. This question type appears once or twice in the exam. You  need to speak for at least 30 seconds, but not more than 1 minute and 30 seconds. You  can listen to the recording 3 times during the 30-second listening time.

12. Interview Part – Speaking 

In this part you need to choose one topic to talk about for 1-3 minutes. This part is for interview purpose and will not be assessed. You can see some questions below:

In this part you need to choose one topic to write. Time limit is 5 minutes. There is word limit.
